Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on 28 May 1883 in Bhagur Village of Nashik, Maharashtra. He belongs to a Hindu Brahmin family.Since from his childhood,Veer Savarkar was a true patriot who was ready to sacrifice everything for mother land.He was a visionary, revolutionary patriot & a brilliant personality. His name has been carved in golden letters not only in the history of India but also in the history of the world.
Veer Savarkar begins his political activities from High School as he joined the political party 'Hindu Mahasabha' and played a very vital role to popularize the term 'Hindutva'.He later joined the Ferguson college in Pune along with his brother and here he founded a secret society called Abhinav Bharat Society. - First man to espouse Swadeshi and organise bonfire of foreign clothes in 1905, but unfortunately both Gandhi and Gokhale criticised this campaign.
He was against the congress party because it was founded by a retired British officer A.O.Hume with some landlords and Britishers and at the time of foundation of Congress party there were no representative of common people of India and there objective was to attain some rights from British Government. But Veer Savarkar's goal to get Purna Swaraj (complete independence).
When British tried to call 1857 a Sepoy Mutiny, he called it the 'First War of Indian Independence'.Till his book 'The Indian War of Independence of 1857' to be published, the whole world thinks that the revolt of 1857 was a military rebellion. But he thrown light on the revolt of 1857 and bring truth in front of the world from his book 'The Indian war of Independence of 1857'.His book was banned by the Britishers. He represents indomitable spirit and patriotism. Veer Savarkar inspired many people to join the freedom movement. In 1910, Veer Savarkar was arrested and ordered to be extradited to India for his connections with the revolutionary group India House. In 1911 Veer Savarkar was sentenced to two life terms of imprisonment totalling fifty years and was moved to the "Kala Pani Prison (Cellular Jail) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
At that time , the "Kaala Pani Prison" (cellular Jail) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands was famous for giving cruel punishment to the prisoners. The deadliest punishments was given by the Britishers to Veer Savarkar. He was reportedly, restrained in chains, flogged, and resigned to six months of solitary confinement. Tied to the mill, he was made to extract oil all day, while being denied even basic access to toilets or water. By some accounts, he was often forced to eat rotten food infested with worms and insects as punishment for his 'crimes' against the government. But all these punishments are failed to end the courage of Independence inside Veer Savarkar. He get motivation from these punishments, makes stones his pen and walls of prison his paper, he started writing poems against the Britishers. He wrote almost 8-10 thousands lines on the walls of prison.Unlike numerous political prisoners who were driven to insanity or committed suicide, Veer Savarkar showed remarkable resilience and was ultimately rewarded for it in January 1924 when he was finally released from prison.
After his release from prison, the Britishers monitored his actions but he continues his great reforms. He raised his voice against the untouchability and bring equality among all the castes. He makes the entry of every Hindu in the temple without any prohibition of any caste. This bring a social reform in India and brings the idea of equality among all. From 1937 ,he travelled alot in India and successful to bring an independence reforms. He raised the voice for Hindu Rashtra for India but rejected by so called seculars.Veer Savarkar's efforts along with other freedom fighters brings India's Independence on 15th August 1947.
After Independence the congress started spreading myths against Veer Savarkar and treated him badly.PM Nehru didn't revoke the ban from his book imposed by the British government till 5 years of Independence. They spread a myth that Veer Savarkar sent an apology letter to the Britishers at the time of his imprisonment. But this was totally false as he never sent an apology to British government and faced many punishments in the prison. The other myth is that he was responsible for the partition of India but everyone knows that Nehru and Jinnah was the culprits in the division of India as they wants position and power. The media and historians were under the congress at that time, so they didn't look the matter and most of them started mythology.
Inspite from the injustice done by congress to Veer Savarkar, one of the Prime minister from congress, Smt.Indira Gandhi called Veer Savarkar , a true freedom fighter and issued a commemorative stamp in Savarkar's honour in 1970.She also gave private donation for the statue of Veer Savarkar and ordered the Films Division to produce a documentary on his life.
