INDIAN MARRIAGES : SEVEN VOWS
The beauty of Indian Hindu wedding is that every ritual has some cultural and religious importance.
Seven Vows is one of the significant part of Indian Hindu marriages. For the seven vows to take place, the holy fire is lit by the Pandit (Hindu Priest) by using wood, ghee, cow dung etc in Hawan Kund (Sacred fireplace). A ritual is known as Sapdapadi (Seven steps) where the bride and the groom go around the holy fire seven times during which the bride asks the groom for seven promises one by one.

FIRST PROMISE
तीर्थव्रतोद्यापन यज्ञकर्म मया सहैव प्रियवयं कुर्या:।
वामांगमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रवीति वाक्यं प्रथमं कुमारी॥
MEANING😊
During the first round, the bride asks the groom for the promise that in any auspicious work like yajnas, visiting religious places, observing fasts etc, she will accompany him and deserves a place in his left side.
That's why in any kind of Hindu rituals both Husband-Wife are necessary and it should be considered uncompleted if one of them are absent.
SECOND PROMISE
पुज्यौ यथा स्वौ पितरौ ममापि तथेशभक्तो निजकर्म कुर्या:।
वामांगमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रवीति कन्या वचनं द्वितीयम॥
MEANING😊
In the second round, the bride asks groom for the promise that the way he respect his parents in the same way he should respect her parents and consider them like his own parents and will stay in the boundaries of the family
This promise is based on the farsightedness of the bride that in future if any misunderstanding happens her family will not pay for that and should be treated with respect.
THIRD PROMISE
जीवनम अवस्थात्रये मम पालनां कुर्यात।
वामांगंयामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रवीति कन्या वचनं तृतीयं॥
MEANING😊
During the third round, the bride asks groom for the promise to be with her in every stage of life i:e youth, adulthood and oldage.
The bride wants that her life partner will love her forever and will never leave her at any circumstances.
FOURTH PROMISE
कुटुम्बसंपालनसर्वकार्य कर्तु प्रतिज्ञां यदि कातं कुर्या:।
वामांगमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रवीति कन्या वचनं चतुर्थं॥
MEANING😊
In the fourth round, the bride asks groom for the promise that after marriage he should realize his duties and responsibilities towards his family. She asks the groom to fulfill all the needs of home.
The bride wants that her life partner should be self dependent and be able to fullfill the needs in future.
FIFTH PROMISE
स्वसद्यकार्ये व्यवहारकर्मण्ये व्यये मामापि मन्त्रयेथा।
वामांगमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रूते वच: पंचमत्र कन्या॥
MEANING😊
During the fifth round, the bride asks the groom for the promise that if he participates in any kind of monetary transactions, he will take her opinion as well.
The bride wants that her life partner will take her opinion in every important matter and also respect her point of views.
SIXTH PROMISE
न मेपमानमं सविधे सखीनां द्यूतं न वा दुर्व्यसनं भंजश्चेत।
वामाम्गमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रवीति कन्या वचनं च षष्ठम॥
MEANING😊
In the sixth round, the bride asks the groom for the promise that he would never insult her in front of others, even if a mistake happens he will sought out in private. The bride wants respect from her life partner.
Further the bride asks for the promise that she would only accepts him if he will stay away from bad habits like drinking, gambling etc because this would affect their life in future.
SEVENTH PROMISE
परस्त्रियं मातृसमां समीक्ष्य स्नेहं सदा चेन्मयि कान्त कुर्या।
वामांगमायामि तदा त्वदीयं ब्रूते वच: सप्तममत्र कन्या॥
MEANING😊
During the seventh and last round the bride asks the groom for the promise that he should respect other women and will never allow anyone to come between their relationship.
The bride wants the promise of loyalty from her life partner.
If the groom agrees to obey these vows, only then the bride accepts him as her life partner.
In India, Marriage is an alliance that binds not just two people but also their families together.
